The Fair Share Trust

Community Foundations across the UK are working with The Fair Share Trust,  a £50 million UK-wide programme funded by the Big Lottery Fund, aimed at building social capital, community capacity and improving the environment in disadvantaged areas that have not received their fair share of Lottery funding in the past.

As well as running the succesful Darlington Champions programme, County Durham Foundation works with Fair Share in the Northgate and Central Wards of Darlington, distributing money to community projects in order to increase local services and facilities, specifically for the benefit of health, education and the environment.

We work with Fair Share to ensure that local people and businesses work together for the benefit the local community. The major goals of the programme are to enhance the employment prospects and skills of local people, promote social inclusion, and promote the sustainable regeneration of Darlington.

The scheme has been in operation since 2004 and so far has made a lasting impact in the two wards it benefits. An example of a project that is expected to make a real difference to the lives of people in Darlington is the grant of £19,500 to fund an extension and refurbishment of the premises belonging to The Darlington and District Social Club for the Blind and Visually Impaired. The group provides a place for blind and visually impared people to relax and enjoy a positive environment as well as receiving any support they require. Fair Share's grant will pave the way for the refurbishment and purchase of equipment that are vital to the group's future.
