Darlington Civic
Theatre celebrates its centenary
Darlington Civic Theatre is celebrating its centenary
this year with a host of special events. The theatre
opened its doors in September 1907 and over the years
has hosted many famous names such as Charlie Chaplin,
Tommy Cooper and Dame Vera Lynn. The theatre still
attracts some of the biggest names and everyone involved
is looking forward to the next 100 years!
In recent years Darlington
Champions has funded many local people hoping to make
a career out of performing on the big stage. We have
paid towards the cost of attending National Theatre
courses, room hire and equipment costs helping young
performers to chase their dream. If you would like
become a Darlington Champion and support the arts
in Darlington you

The Sewing Ladies
Group

The Sewing Ladies Group was set up to
enable disadvantaged woman and single parents to gain
new skills and have fun! The Darlington-based group meet on a weekly
basis to learn sewing, embroidery and craft skills
that help build self confidence and future employability.
The group play an active roll in the
town by helping other community groups. They recently
assisted a group performing a play to celebrate 200
years since the abolition of slavery. Weeks
of hard work were put in to designing banners that
were used as a backdrop to the play. The play took place last week at the
Darlington Arts Centre and was a great success. I
think you’ll agree the banners are fantastic!
