Steam Shed

Steam Shed in Darlington was set up with the help of the acclaimed theatre company Chicken Shed (pictured to the right). The group offers opportunities for every member of the community to become involved in drama, music and dance. Their work is fully inclusive with members from all cultural, physical ability and educational backgrounds working on an equal basis.

People of all abilities are given the opportunity to participate in dance, drama and singing, helping their development and self esteem. The project in Darlington is the 22nd “Shed” to be established in the country and is named Steam Shed in homage to the town’s railway heritage.

Steam Shed were awarded £6,850 to purchase equipment, produce a DVD and hold a recruitment campaign to increase awareness of their work and increase their membership. The additional equipment will mean that the group can cater for the expected increase in numbers and that those participating will have a more interactive experience.

Steam Shed is part of the Darlington Educational Village, a federation of schools that work together to make a positive contribution to their pupils. Nationally, Chicken Shed has produced more than 1,000 performances of extraordinary theatre since they started in 1974. They have performed at the Royal Albert Hall, Wembley, 10 Downing Street and numerous other venues. Their two founders have both received MBE's for their inclusion and creativity work in the community.
